40 Days to a JoyFilled Life Living the 48 Principle Tommy Newberry 9781414366906 Books Reviews
Sometimes I need a big swift kick in the rear or at least a daily reminder to look for the good stuff, all the time, no matter what. An eye opener and although sometimes it seems like the author wants you to just lay down and completely ignore the reality of some bad things, it really isn't that way. I truly did the exercises, prayed about it, and DID what was asked and I am truly a happier person when I'm thinking positive. Two thumbs up, but YOU have to do the work, the book doesn't work if you don't DO what it says. Denial and holding in the "I have every right to feel this negative way" is not the winning choice. Let it go, focus on the positive and just DO it!
Ever wondered how to practically bring about a personal transformaion by the renewing of your mind? Renewing your mind, what is that? A form a brain washing or something? I believe this book and its prequel The 48 Principle are the practical instructions on renewing our minds.
Organized into 40 daily lessons, with drills and a thought to hold on to at the end, 15 minutes a day can get you through this book in 40 days. But if you're more serious about it, you can do the extra mile exercises and chew on the meat of each chapter all day long. This is great for personal use or group use.
I think a lot of people don't even realize how negative their thinking is - all day, every day. This book is a good mirror into your mind to help you realize how your thoughts are shaping your interactions and relationships. This, and the prequel, make my very short list of books I'll read more than once. I think this would be a great annual exercise.
I read this book with a small group of people as sort of a 40 day challenge. We had a lot of fun with it. Lots of practical exercises and points for discussion. I personally felt he sometimes downplayed the need, and value, of working through the more "negative" emotions such as grief or anger as another valid aspect of maintaining a healthy emotional life. But overall a very inspirational 40 day exercise!
As a self-admitted lover of all things "self-help" or "personal improvement" I found this book to be everything I could hope for. I know that's a big claim, but there's not much else to say. It's cutting edge with it's science and psychology and it's biblical to boot. Sure, that might turn off some of you. But if you're looking for results, and wanting to feel the passion, happiness and finally the joy of life that has thus far escaped you, you honestly can't go wrong with this newest release from Tommy.
The book is about a journey to delve into who we are and how we work in our minds, thought lives and what we can do about changing our experiences so that we can have the joy we know is there waiting for us. The book is truly easy reading, but deep and profound in principal. I found it to be very insightful and best of all, easily applicable to my life. That's quite a combo you can't say for say many other books that are "woo-woo" or out there.
I've told others that this book replaces so many of the self-help classics on my bookshelf for good reason - it works. Yes, you have to work the plan to have it work for you, but it's truly homework you'll be in love with. It gets my highest recommendation. I'm excited for the changes I'll experience as I go through this book again, and slower. My wife and I plan to go through it together, and I hope it blesses you like I know it will us. Pick it up and read it. You'll be glad you did.
Fantastic!! I have gone thru this program in a women's group at our church - and have since purchased several copies for friends who have recently experienced hard times. It reinforces that although we may have hundreds of problems - we have millions of blessings!! I volunteer at a homeless transition home and pass along the good news to the folks who live there. This book is for everyone!
Who wouldn't want joy, especially joy that grows, develops, and transforms one's life? Based on Philippians 48, I thought this book would be merely think good thoughts, it was so much more.
Tommy Newberry in 40 Days to a Joy-Filled Life provided practical steps and tools to build joy in my life. After 40 days I found myself more joyful, more hopeful, and more resilient in living life.
He doesn't deny the existence of problems as too many self-help gurus do. He provides practical steps for building life through the best and the worst.

Each daily reading was a good realignment to joy in my life. Some of my favorites were Day 11, "Harboring Gratitude" and the Joy of Appreciation and Day 17 Hunting Rats The Joy of Being Battle Ready and my absolute favorite was Day 40, Occupy God Street The Joy of His Presence.
Now that I am in my day 41 and beyond, I look forward to living a joy-filled life and am grateful to have a joy-filled resource to return to time and again.
I give 40 Days to a Joy-Filled Life 5 out of 5 stars. Thanks Tommy for building my Joy reservoir, hopefully to overflowing!
