I bought this book purely out of nostalgia. I don't have kids, but this was my very favorite book as a little girl and I never forgot it. After treating my childhood rag doll to a new dress recently, a one-armed doll with tattered toes that I've loved for over 40 years, I remembered this book and was thrilled to find it still available. It tells the story of a little girl who gets invited to a party where there will be a doll contest. She has antique dolls, fancy dolls, dolls that do things, and then she has her favorite doll, who is a bit ragged and worn from years of love. Her loyalty to her beloved doll is rewarded at the party and there is a wonderful moral about staying true to yourself and being proud of who you are, even when you might feel inferior. The story is full of simple dialogue, and near the beginning the dolls themselves have secret conversations with each other when "their" little girl is out of the room, and I always loved the idea of that.

Originally written in 1962, the book itself is somewhat dated on one hand, in that there is some slightly outdated wording like "I shall", "your dress is a fright", etc. But on the other hand it's a truly timeless story that outshines any slightly dated language. I actually like the older-style wording, it makes it fun to read. It's a classic! The illustrations are simple, using only the colors of lavender, black and gray. But they're still very expressive, showing that sometimes the simplest of drawings can portray a whole lot of emotion. Personally, I was very relieved to see the original artwork being used in this newer edition, it wouldn't have been the same with updated drawings, but again, I come from the perspective of nostalgia.

I absolutely loved books as a kid and had hundreds of them, donating boxes full to the library every year as I accumulated new ones. But this one stands out by far as my favorite, even after all these years. I am very pleased to have found it again.

As a girl, I loved any books about dolls, especially when they came to life and had grand adventures. This is a book I discovered at my local library and continued to check out and re-read over and over. As an adult, putting together my own home library, how could I not purchase this classic story of unpopular, sympathetic outcast winning the day with the grand prize. A gentle, moral story emphasizing the importance of looking beyond outward appearances finding true value within.
I admit I mostly bought this out of nostalgia from when it was read to me as a child. It is a sweet story about how the best-loved things in life are not always glittering with gold or fancy extras. The one drawback -- and this is from the original as well -- is that the entire book is illustrated in shades of black, gray, and pink. The problem is that in one section, which describes a doll's dress as blue, the dress is clearly shown in the picture as pink -- something even my 4-year-old noticed. Who knows why the author, illustrator, or publisher decided to make that choice way back when, but be prepared to answer questions about it if your kiddo is as observant as mine.
I've loved this book since i was a child. Its about valuing people for who they are inside and what they mean to you and not as most people today value only that which is shiny and fancy. There's a great lesson in this book for little children, but a nice reminder for adults, too. This is a book about loyalty.
i am in my 50's and this was a book I read as a child. it has taken YEARS to find the book- I could not remember the name, only the little dolls in the book. I've racked my brain for literally most of my life trying to remember, and could not come up with anything. I was looking for Mr. Pine's Purple House on , and what should pop up in "books other people are purchasing", but the image of this very book. I knew the INSTANT I saw the cover that it was the book I've been searching for years for. I am SO EXCITED!!! as soon as the mail arrived, I was ripping the packaging off and reading while I was walking back to the house- I had tears running down my face! what an awesome book for kids (and old kids too!) that tells a heartwarming story of unconditional love. after a not-so-happy childhood, it's amazing that this book has stuck with me for this many years, but again, a story of unconditional love. it's awesome )
A Life Lesson of being gracious and simple. Seeing the beauty in your own "Best" loved doll will come to mind with this book. I had a best loved doll...her name was Thumbelina! I still have her and she has a forever special place in my heart and on my guest bed to this day. For any doll lover (and you don't have to be one to love the story line) this is a must have book. The entire classroom will enjoy this book. The ending is precious...The Best Loved Doll that was chosen to go to the "party" brought her party favors back to the other not-chosen dolls and shared! Sweet indeed to end on this note. Thank you for making it available. I have ordered and sent it to friends as gifts. There is a "little girl" inside all of us girls/women. All kids enjoy this book I have found.
I remembered this book from childhood and reading it again brought back fond memories. The story is about a young girl who cannot decide which doll to bring to a party where there will be prizes for best dressed doll, oldest doll and the doll who can do the most things. She has a doll in each of those categories, and could possibly win, but she is only allowed to bring one doll. She ultimately decides to bring the doll she loves most - a raggedy doll with bandages on her face and tangled hair. What happens next is a bit of a surprise, but a very good one. The book can be used to teach various lessons to children. First, that the girls whose dolls did not win anything did not pout, but all were good sports. Second, that the little girl went with the doll she loved the most instead of trying to win a prize. The friendships among the girls and the sensitivity of the mom hosting the party are all classic...and the old-fashioned drawings captures everything in a timeless way. Beautiful story overall. I wish it was hardcover to last longer, but alas, it is softcover so children have to be careful with it.
