Double Whammy Carl Hiaasen 9780446695664 Books

Carl weaves a great story about bass fishing in Florida and Louisiana. He usually gives one of the bad guys a bizarre situation to get through, and Double Whammy is no different.

RJ Decker is hired by Dennis Gault to provide incriminating evidence against a suspected cheating bass fisherman. The plot roams along the eastern seaboard of Florida and into Louisiana. In the end, it shows how money will make good people, or slightly nefarious people, do bad things in an effort to get more of it.

Skink is a very eccentric character, and he means well to the environment. He goes a little too far sometimes, but you can't fault his passion.

Double Whammy Carl Hiaasen 9780446695664 Books Reviews

This is one of my favorite books of all time. I bought this copy for a buddy of mine because he bought a bass boat and needed to know what it will inevitably lead to.
I have long been a fan of Hiaasen's, ever since I read this first Skink novel years ago. Rereading it now was just as enjoyable as the first time. His well developed and unforgettable characters, his zany plots, and his sardonic humor are right up my alley. That I long have had family in Florida, and now live there myself, adds a little extra pleasure.
I have never read a Hiaasen novel where the characters are not larger than life, and in a very unique way amazingly real! Mr. Hiaasen has a way of writing novels that are not overly complex, that are peopled with characters that seem too crazy to be true, and yet he brings it all together in a very satisfying way that usually teaches the reader something about the human condition, and our world.
Plus, he is funny!
"Double Whammy" is a fine example of these traits.
Private eye R.J. Decker has a checkered past, and seems to have a present that is just as bizarre. Some of the novel's finest writing deals with Decker's passion for photography, and how this passion shapes the way in which he views the world. It is a gift of Hiaasen's to take you from laughter to thoughtful reflection in the same paragraph.
R.J. Decker is a likable character, surpassed only in likeability in this text by the unbelievable, yet intriguingly "real" character named Skink. There are some nice twists in this novel involving this character, which I won't reveal here, and Hiaasen uses Skink as his avenging angel in this text. When people do bad things God's vengeance is quick, and usually comes in the form of this crazy hermit.
And all of this centers around bass fishing?!
There are times that Hiaasen is too stereotypical for my taste with the "redneck" persona of southerners, but he is careful to not paint all people with the same shade, so it is easily forgiven.
Despite their medium length, Mr. Hiaasen's novels are quick reads. They are formulaic but they are also witty, well written, and only rarely disappointing.
R.J. Decker is a former newspaper photographer turned private investigator. His temper has gotten him in trouble in the past, and he's still in love with his ex-wife (who still loves him, but stays married to her new husband...because he has money? not sure why, but it doesn't matter).

He's hired by a very wealthy man, Dennis Gault, to prove that one of the top ranked bass fishermen, Dickie Lockhart is a cheat. The last person Gault hired was killed, presumably by Lockhart. Of course, nothing is as it seems and Decker needs the help of some other characters including Miami detective Al Garcia who has appeared in previous books, Jim Tile, a state trooper who hasn't been treated all that well by the people he works with, and a crazy hermit named Skink (who is a former governor of Florida).

Easy read, funny, and as a big Skink fan, it was nice to re-read his introduction.
A panoply of ignorant tourists, gorgeous babes, and large-mouth bass fisherman (one VERY corrupt) must contend with a very intelligent black State Policeman and a crusading journalist in this classic, and very funny, Carl Hiaasen satire. This is a good book to start with. It's also "Skink's" first novel.
I am still reading this as I write.... and will be back to reading it within two minutes of this review....... I Love Darl Hiaasen books.... the characters are like old friends .... the setting is the state I was born in. I lived in Florida for 25 years and ever town, gas station, location and site he writes about is a place I have been to at one time or another..... I Love these Super Exciting and adventurous stories from this author with a brilliant and captivating ability to pull me into the story and make me hate to put the book down..... I have fallen asleep many mornings between 3 and 4 a.m. with my in my hands.... I will read til I can no longer stay awake ..... I can't get enough of any of Hiaasen novel...... each one is recent history to me...... and his love and passion for the Florida that was is infectious ....... and his humor is outstanding ....... his characters are vivid, alive and real in the mind's eye...... did I mention..... I Love reading Carl Hiaasen? D. R. Ragsdale .... aka.... Uncle Raggy
Carl Hiaasen writes Florida books as if this state is the only piece of the land that has wild places that must be saved from the unwashed literary world. The story here focuses on Bass fishing and the sport's crazed followers.

You will be engaged in an unbelievably complex story involving the corruption that exists in the fishing world of the South. This book includes the exploits of Skink, a recluse that travels the Florida landscape searching for recent road kill to prepare for dinner.

Hiaasen is an acquired taste, and I have acquired it.
