I am not going to write a review about the novel in the usual way. No, this time I want to speak of the quality of the writing from this, in my opinion, excellent story teller.

Ms. Ernst has a way of taking two individual stories and seamlessly blending them into a captivating and compelling novel. In this case it was about life in a lead mining town in Wisconsin. The tales were current days (well, 1983) and life from 1830's. The stories were individual but by the ending were interwoven like a fine blanket. You feel the emotions of all the characters. You are surprised by the conclusion. You find you can't wait for the next novel in the series.

Ms. Ernst is an award winning author, and by reading any of the novels in this series, you can see why. I found myself interested in the history, genealogy, and story of the lives in Mineral Point, Wisconsin. Also, pictures of the actual locations are included, even in the Kindle version.

I hope I've sparked your interest in reading these well-crafted murder mysteries. They contain so many levels within that I think all persons that love reading will enjoy the books. I do.

She showed her reseach instead of writing a story. Slow moving, poorly written.
The Chloe Ellefson books are all written with jumps back and forth between characters/events. In the print versions, there are spaces between these sections. On my kindle version of this book, there are no spaces. Disconcerting at first and an annoyance.
Other than that, I love this book and the rest of the series.
I (Nancy Blight Fine Oertel) received a copy of this book as a gift from a friend who knew that my ancestors lived in Mineral Point from the mid 1800s and left during the Depression.
I loved this book. The details of Mineral Point are so factual that you feel that you are living there. The characters from Cornwall were so real.
The Cornish food and places are accurately described as I remember them. Great job. There is nothing to dislike about this book and it is the best book I have received in decades.
I just finished with the most recent in the series of Chloe Ellefson mysteries. I have been fascinated by each book. Even though they are fiction, the author has taken a lot care with helping the reader understand the actual history of the area and time written about in each book
I hope the author will be writing more books.

I love all of Kathleen Ernst's books and have read every one of them. Her characters are so true to life and she seems to do a whole lot of historical research before she writes her books. She always writes a story from the 1800 or 1900's and then from the 1980's before the internet became a big deal. She intermingles both time periods together and her books are so different from any other author. I just love her books. PS She also writes children's stories from American Girl and that is how she started writing for adults.
This series is one of my most-favorite e-book finds. The well-written, tightly-plotted stories are told from multiple points of view, and from differing eras. The “current day” is in the early 1980s, and the historical portions about 100 years previous.

I know this marks me as a Philistine, but I rarely read the historical portions. I don’t feel like I miss anything by not doing so (except my inner hall monitor does tsk tsk at me for being shallow); those sections are beautifully written and clearly thoroughly researched, they just don’t hold my interest. What has grabbed me is the present day stories and the relationships between Chloe and Roelke, Roekle’s love for his cousin, Libby, and her children; Chloe’s dedication to historic preservation; Roekle’s love of policing; and all the characters’ human frailties. The author’s description of government work, office politics, territory marking, and small town policing are spot on.

If you like character-driven mysteries with a historical component, this is the series for you. It’s so far the only one I’ve ever paid so much for e-books (about $10 per book) and never regretted it. lists this as a nine-book series … I don’t know if that means it’s ending after book nine (to be published in October 2018), or if that’s all there is at the moment. That makes me sad because I like these characters so much.
Kathleen Ernst is a writer's writer to the maximum degree. Her extensive research flows into comfortable descriptive passages marked by attention to detail and plausibility. As she weaves her storyline between the early 1800's and 1983, characters come alive and live their life experiences fully. Hardships by often illiterate immigrants are revealed in Ms. Ernst's vivid portrayals and the hard decisions they had to make. I know that researching the Cornish experience is very tough from my own efforts to locate written records. Ms. Ernst doesn't let that lead her astray as she reveals life in the deep cold countryside of Mineral Point, Wisconsin. Bringing the story forward is done with grace and sensitivity for individuals who want to convey the truth of that history and those who would continue, in ignorance, to justify untruths. As always, Chloe and Roelke dance a romantic ballet while sub-plots heighten the suspense. As other reviewers have commented, the author's use of artifacts from the past take on new meaning in 1983 and enrich a strong, engaging tale. Characters are shown in differing stages of life as they evolve in the book. I especially like the portrayal of young Holly; Roelke's crisis of identity as a police officer is melded into the scenario very satisfyingly; the tenacious researcher, the staff at the living village of Pendarvis and others are standouts as the contemporary drama unfolds...a thoroughly enjoyable piece of historical fiction!
